Chapter News and Events

SOUTH FLORIDA HUSKERS UPDATE (April 9, 2014):

What a great event we had last Sunday night at the first Taste of Nebraska event in South Florida!  We had seventy-five Husker fans attend the event at the Hollywood Beach Golf Resort.  We had a wonderful silent auction filled with all sorts of unique items donated by our members: Greg Bean, Christine Coenen, Peggy Johannsen, Rob Klostermeyer, Maggie Kreuzberger, Kathy Hanley, Shelly Loos, Packy's Sports Pub, Stacey Rudy, Carolyn Van Meter and Mike Zaidman.  We had plenty of food for everyone and even had some leftovers to take home too.  This really was an extraordinary event with special thanks to all the Board Members of the South Florid Huskers to pull this off.  If there is interest in repeating this event, please let us know.

SPRING GAME
Next up is the Red / White Spring game this Saturday night, April 12th at 8 pm. The game actually takes place at 2 pm, but the Big Ten network won't air the game until that evening.  Packy's Sports Pub will broadcast the game.  Since it is an evening game and not too much notice was given, Packy's will only be able to leave the audio on for the first half since they have a band already scheduled for that evening.  The game will be shown in its entirety for those fans in attendance.
Packy's has assured us for the fall season, no band will be scheduled the same time as Husker games.

MARLINS GAME
The Annual South Florida Big Ten Chapters game at Marlins Park will take place on Tuesday, June 17 at 7 pm.  The Marlins will host the Chicago Cubs.  Tickets for this game for our group will be $19.50 per person.  The ticket location is in the lower bowl behind the dugout, so, really, some excellent seats this year.  To purchase tickets, please send your checks to Illinois Alumni Club, 1201 SW 141 Ave., #104, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027.  Questions?? Call Doug Maran, President of the Illinois Alumni Club of South Florida at 954-435-7333 or illinoisalumni@yahoo.com.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARD
The first week in October was the University of Nebraska Alumni Association's Chapter & Groups Leadership Conference in Lincoln, the South Florida Huskers were given a Corny, which is an award given to various alumni groups each year.  The Corny we won was for the Award of Excellence in Communications for a small chapter. It was a nice honor among the chapters nominated!

2013 FUNDRAISER FOR SOUTH FLORIDA
For our 2013 fundraiser we asked our members to donate pairs of white socks during the entire season of watch parties for the St. Laurence Chapel for the Homeless in Pompano Beach.  We just tried to do our part to help with this worthy cause each week.  Our final total reached 240 pairs!  Great job!

SCHOLARSHIP FUND DONATION--On Monday, February 11, 2013, The South Florida Huskers presented a $2,000 check to the University of Nebraska Foundation at CJ's Drafthouse for our annual gift to our scholarship fund!  From the money we raised from donations from the past year for our raffles, t-shirt sales and other donations, we were able to give to the Foundation.  We really appreciate everyone's continued support!  If you are interested in making a personal donation to our designated fund, click on this link http://nufoundation.org - which will direct you to the University of Nebraska Foundation web site and then click Make a Gift and search funds for  "South Florida Huskers" and the South Florida Huskers Scholarship Fund will appear.  GBR!
